Author Guidelines

The Eastern Ukrainian Medical Journal (EUMJ) is an open-access peer-reviewed journal in the fields of medicine and biomedicine.

The Journal’s editorial team consists of highly skilled researchers and research managers, who are ready to help the authors publish valuable and potentially impactful articles. The journal editors will promote the published works through available open-access platforms and social media channels to attract the attention of the global readership and will try their best to cooperate closely with global indexing services and relevant professional societies to increase the visibility of the published works.

Article types

The Journal publishes the following types of articles: systematic reviews, expert opinions, original research, case studies with extensive literature reviews (case-based reviews), interviews with experts, meeting reports.

The Journal editors encourage the authors to familiarize themselves with the following documents prior to the submission of their manuscripts:

Language, preparation, and technical specifications

The EUMJ publishes articles in two languages – Ukrainian and English. However, well-edited submissions in English are strongly encouraged to attract the attention of researchers from other countries and strengthen their research and academic collaboration.

A mixture of the language styles in a single article is unacceptable. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that their manuscripts are substantively edited and corrected. The Journal editors will check the readability of the submissions; they may suggest either editing by the authors/their editors prior to sending to the reviewers or reject outright based on poor readability.

The authors are advised to adhere to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). The terms should be given according to the anatomical and histological nomenclatures; diseases – according to the current International Classification of Diseases; drug names – according to the International Nonproprietary Names (INN).

The manuscript should be typed in MS WORD using А4. Font ­– Times New Roman, 12 pts, 1.5 line spacing; margins: top, bottom, and left – 1.5; right – 2.0. Original articles (apart from the title page, tables, figures, and references) should not exceed 12 printed pages, reviews of literature – 15–20 printed pages, clinical cases and correspondence – 7 printed pages.

Numerical intervals are written without spaces through dashes (2022–2025 years; 35–45 cm). Along with numbers, instead of a regular space, a non-breaking space (key combination Ctrl+Shift+space) is used in cases: before and after mathematical signs (+, -, :, ×, ±, <, >, etc.), before units of measurement (ml/kg, g, mg/kg, IU, mmol/l, min, h, etc.), percentages (%), temperature (°C) and other physical and mathematical quantities. It is necessary to monitor the correctness of writing indices in words, for example: В6, H2S, Na+, etc. Words written in Latin are highlighted in italics: C. Albicans, Helicobacter руlоrі, etc.

Abstract.  Ukrainian and English abstracts should be more than 250 words, including keywords. Abstracts should conform to IMRAD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion). Each abstract should be preceded by the title of the manuscript, full names of authors, their ORCID identifiers and affiliations, as well as contact details of the corresponding author, all being indicated in the corresponding language (download a sample of abstract).

Keywords. The list of keywords should contain 5–10 words maximum, separated by commas. We suggest that keywords differ from those used in the title. The structured keywords may be retrieved from MeSH in PubMed. We draw authors’ particular attention to the importance of carefully preparing title, keywords, and abstract, as these elements are indicators of the manuscript content in the bibliographic database and search engines. Besides, authors should take care to indicate their affiliations and personal information correctly as it affects further indexing.

Materials and Methods. For original research papers, Materials and Methods section shall include a description of the statistical analysis and statistical study design. Authors indicate the methods of statistical analysis and justify the choice of criteria for statistical significance tests. Apart from that, they indicate the level of marginal significance (p-value) within a statistical hypothesis test, representing the probability of the occurrence of a given event (for example: "A p-value of more than 0.05 was considered statistically significant"). If the data analysis was carried out using a statistical package of programs, its name and version have to be indicated. 

Abbreviations. Abbreviations should be defined on their first citation in the text, except for the units of measurement. Avoid generally unacceptable abbreviations. Do not use abbreviations in the title and abstract.

Authorship Criteria and Authors’ Contribution Details. The Journal editors endorse principles of integrity and visibility of pre- and post-publication communications presented by the Sarajevo Declaration on Integrity and Visibility of Scholarly Publications. In line with the Declaration, the authors are advised to register with the Open Researcher and Contributor iD (ORCID) and list their ORCID IDs in their submissions.

The following authorship criteria endorsed by the ICMJE are acceptable:

  1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  2. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  3. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Funding. The authors are obliged to provide full information about any related sponsorship or funding of their research (either an institution or individual person). If you mention a grant, please indicate the fund, grant name, and/or grant number. For example (select as appropriate):

  • The work was carried out with the financial support of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine [project No…]).
  • The study was carried out with the support of [name of foundation/grantor/institution] within the framework of the project/grant No... .
  • The study was carried out within the framework of the scientific and research work of [Name of institution] (state registration number: [Number]).
  • The study did not receive any financial support from the state, commercial or non-commercial sectors. The authors carried out the work at their own expense or within the framework of their main employment..

Conflicts of Interest Disclosure. The authors are responsible for full disclosure of any financial and non-financial conflicts of interest that may compromise the trustworthiness of their manuscripts. The authors should familiarize themselves with the ICMJE statement on conflict of interest and submit the filled conflict of interest forms for all co-authors along with the manuscript.

Artificial Intelligence Disclosure. The use of generative AI is only permitted provided there is clear disclosure, appropriate human oversight, and compliance with ethical standards and data security requirements. All authors are required to disclose the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools or technologies based on it during research and/or preparation of publication.

Ethical Approval. If the study involved human subjects, authors must provide the protocol number of the Ethics Committee's decision, date, and name of the institution, e.g.:

The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of [Institution], protocol No.… dated …

Apart from that, authors must also confirm obtaining voluntary informed consent from the participants (Ethical Principles for Research Involving Human Participants).

Animal experimentation must adhere to globally recognized guidelines and comply with national and international legislation.

Acknowledgement (optional). An acknowledgement is a formal section used to thank individuals and institutions who supported the research but do not meet authorship criteria.

References. The authors should ensure referring to highly relevant literature items, primarily those retrieved from multidisciplinary bibliographic databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science. Referring to each scientific fact requires at least one reference. At the same time, multiple examples of similar references (more than 3) are not acceptable. References to unpublished materials (manuscripts, dissertations, reports) are not allowed.

Excessive self-citation known as "citation stuffing" is strictly forbidden (no more than 1-2 fundamental sources). 

The Reference List should conform to the АМА (American Medical Association) Style and in line with the guidance of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. The following tool to convert literature sources into AMA style may also be helpful. References should be arranged and numbered consecutively in the order that they first appear in the text. Citation of references throughout the text should be given in brackets using Arabic numerals, e.g. [18]. Multiple citations within a single set of brackets should be separated by a comma. The authors should provide abbreviations of journal titles according to the standards of Index Medicus. DOIs should be provided for all references whenever possible. Tables. Please provide each table on a separate page of the manuscript after the references. Tables should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and referred to in the text by number, e.g. (Table 3). Each table should have an explanatory caption which should be as concise as possible. Write explanations essential to the understanding of the table at the bottom of the table. Identify statistical measures of variations, such as standard deviation and standard error of the mean where appropriate. Footnotes may be used to explain abbreviations but should not include detailed descriptions of the experiment. Tips on formatting tables

Figures. Please provide each figure on a separate page of the manuscript after the references and tables. Number the figures according to their sequence in the text. The text should include references to all figures. Graphs and figures should be in black/white or colored, with high resolution (at least 300 dpi). Each figure legend should provide enough information so that the figure is understandable without frequent reference to the text. The legend should be succinct while still explaining all symbols and abbreviations. Tips on formatting figures

Information About the Authors. Please indicate the full names of the authors, their ORCID identifiers, academic degree, affiliations and positions, contact details, including e-mail, work phone, etc.
