Olexandr Smiyan was born on October 31, 1957, in a family of doctors in Truskavets (Lviv Oblast).
In 1981, he graduated from Ternopil State Medical Institute with honors. From 1981 to 1984, he worked as a clinical resident of the Department of Children's Diseases of Ternopil State Medical Institute. In 1984, he defended his Ph.D. thesis. In 1984–1994, he worked as an assistant and later as an assistant professor at the Department of Children's Diseases of Zaporizhzhya State Medical Institute.
Since 1994, O. Smiyan has been working at Sumy State University (SSU): in 1994–1999, he was an associate professor of the Department of Children's Diseases; since 1999 – Professor, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical Institute of SSU. In 1996 he defended his thesis for the Doctor of Medical Sciences degree. From 2001 to 2005, he was the Dean of the Medical Faculty of SSU.
Olexandr Smiyan wrote about 600 scientific and methodological publications, including articles – 164, methodical recommendations – 66, manuals – 26, monographs – 8, textbooks – 1. He is the author of 16 patents for the invention.
Under the guidance of O. Smiyan, 10 Ph.D. dissertations and 30 Master's dissertations were defended. At present, he is a scientific supervisor of 5 postgraduate students.
The Department works in such scientific areas: clinical and pathogenetic substantiation of the modified regimen for correction of changes in intestinal microbiocenosis in non-hospital pneumonia and bronchitis in children; dysbiotic aspects of immunomicroelemental disorders in children with obstructive bronchitis and optimization of therapeutic measures; clinical and pathogenetic disorders of secondary cardiopathies formation in children with chronic tonsillitis; endogenous predictors of unfavorable rotavirus intestinal infections in children, ways and optimization of treatment; state of the immune response, microecology of the oral cavity and intestines in children with acute respiratory viral infections associated with chronic tonsillitis; clinical and immunological characteristics of acute respiratory viral infections course in children in conjunction with adenoidal vegetations; the study of the peculiarities of the vegetative-vascular dysfunctions in children – the descendants of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident consequences; resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics.
О. Smiyan is an Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Head of the Pediatric Clinic, President of the Sumy Pediatric Association, Board Member of the Sumy Regional Organization of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine, Head of the Trade Union Bureau of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University, Editor-in-Chief of Eastern Ukrainian Medical Journal, Board Member of Editorial College of the following journals: Modern Pediatrics; International Journal of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology; Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology; Medicine; Anti-Aging Eastern Europe.
He was awarded the certificates of honor of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Regional Health Department.
